Reasons to chose thermally modified lumber itself:
Dimensional Stability: once lumber is thermally modified, the stability of its geometrical dimensions improves 10-15 times, regardless of any swings in environmental temperature or humidity. The risk of prolonged swelling decreases by 90% and the material becomes largely immune to all kinds of lasting dimensional deformations.
Hygroscopicity: the lumber equilibrium humidity shrinks to 4%-6%, 3-4 times lower, than after regular industrial drying. Moisture absorption falls 5 times and the material naturally dries up tens of times faster. Even when thermally modi-fied lumber is placed in water its humidity rarely exceeds 10%, and its dimensional deformations are 3-4 times less.
Biological Durability of thermowood is 25 times higher. The 180-220oC temperature of thermal treatment causes polysaccharides decomposition and kills all bacteria. Combined with low specific humidity of the material, this largely precludes emergence & reproduction of fungi, mold and other microorganisms. As a result, the material is fully sterile & uniquely durable (Class 2, comparable to Iroko & WRC and surpassing Larch), lasting (service life of 30+ years even for exterior applications) and resistant to decay & all kinds of biological corrosion, without any fungicidal treatment.
Thermal Conductivity of the material decreases 30%, making it ideal for saunas and all kinds of decking & cladding. Especially taking into account, that the thermal treatment eliminates resin and makes the lumber harder and lighter.
Ecological Purity. Thermal treatment does not presume the use of any chemical substances: only temperature and steam. As a result, the material comes out 100% ecologically pure, safe and completely neutral towards human body.
Aesthetic Beauty. Thermal modification significantly increases aesthetic value of the material, providing it with the appearance of aged (over 100 years) wood. At the same time, wood texture becomes more showy, boosting its decorative qualities. Concentrated noble tint, homogeneous across the whole cross section, is achieved without any toning, due to modification of the wood structure itself. Even inexpensive wood species, once thermally modified, look like rare and valuable ones, with or without subsequent mechanical treatment, coating and varnishing.
